How does the Armorer artificer's Arcane Armor feature interact with heavy armor?

> Beginning at 3rd level, your metallurgical pursuits have led to you making armor a conduit for your magic. As an action, you can turn a suit of armor you are wearing into Arcane Armor, provided you have smith's tools in hand.

Now this is, for the most part, only useful to don heavy armor, such as plate armor. However, I noticed that the Artificer doesn't actually have proficiency in heavy armor - did I miss something? Is the proficiency implied or is not having this proficiency intentional?
