How does the Armorer artificer's Arcane Armor feature interact with heavy armor?

The Armorer subclass of the Artificer has this cool Arcane Armor feature:

Beginning at 3rd level, your metallurgical pursuits have led to you making armor a conduit for your magic. As an action, you can turn a suit of armor you are wearing into Arcane Armor, provided you have smith's tools in hand.

You gain the following benefits while wearing this armor:

  • If the armor normally has a Strength requirement, the arcane armor lacks this requirement for you.
  • [...]

Now this is, for the most part, only useful to don heavy armor, such as plate armor. However, I noticed that the Artificer doesn't actually have proficiency in heavy armor - did I miss something? Is the proficiency implied, or is not having this proficiency intentional?

Yes, you missed an important feature of the Armorer subclass.

The Armorer subclass of the Artificer also has the Tools of the Trade feature when they take the subclass at third level. Tools of the Trade gives the Armorer proficiency with heavy armor and smith's tools. (Or a different type of artisan's tools if they already have it.)

An Artificer doesn't normally have proficiency in heavy armor but the Armorer gets it automatically at the same time they get the Arcane Armor feature.
