Spell damage with gray will in Burning wheel

+1
−0

Weapons deal black shade damage, unless the weapon itself is gray shade. Having gray shade power with a black shade weapon is still black shade damage, with +2 for the gray strength.

Many sorcerous spells have their damage coming from the character's will. By analogue, we would expect gray shade will to give +2 to power, but not make the damage itself gray shade.

On the other hand, there exist no gray shade damage spells or abstractions (in the Magic burner, for the revised edition). The sorcery skill can be shade-shifted to gray, but weapon skills do not cause weapon damage to shift shade, so there seems no reason to believe the sorcery skill would do that.

Further, I remember that a common ruling used to be that gray will does cause gray damage from sorcery, but this is from the revised edition times, and I could not find a citation with a quick look.

There does not seem to be an obvious answer to this question in the gold edition rulebook.

So: How does gray will interact with spell damage? Does this vary from edition to edition?
