A: Is it possible to use Contingency + Vampiric Touch to save yourself from unconsciousness? Contingency requires that the spell being triggered has you as the target. Vampiric touch does not seem to have your self as a valid target, but if it did, then you would take 3d6 necrotic damage and then regain half of that, which makes you worse off, not better. (more) |

I have a sideways answer that might not be satisfying: instead of playing D&D, play a RPG that uses cards, e.g. the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Falkenstein_(role-playing_game) system, or something similar. I understand that playing cards are generally permitted as long as you are neither rem... (more) |

"Mystery cult" is the neutral anthropological descriptive term that college students (a noted population of RPG players) would easily use. Nearly everyone who encounters a mystery cult in a real-world context will be a member of a competing religion or a skeptic, and thus view it negatively.

A: Does a Wizard automatically know how to craft scrolls from known spells? In 5e, every wizard can copy any wizard-class spell into a new spellbook at a minimal cost in time, but preparing a spell is a much more involved activity, described in Xanathar's Guide to Everything on page 133. Briefly, the wizard needs the Arcana skill, any material components, a cost ranging f... (more) |

A: How can I organize my DM notes in such a way that I have access to necessary information but not too much? This is a great application for a wiki! Any wiki will do, but I especially recommend one in which you can offer logins for your players so that you can classify information for yourself, for the players en masse, and for each player individually. The categorization features of a wiki are import... (more) |

A: (How) Can PCs use the frosty orb of a one-eyed shiver? Yes, you can allow a PC to take and use the frosty orb. In order to use it, they will have to destroy their own eye for power. You should immediately consider the effect on their psyche of both contemplating and carrying out such an action. The orb does not provide sight, so the one-eyed disadv... (more) |

A: In Call of Cthulhu, what's best practice for requiring skill checks when there's uncertainty about which skill would be required? In this particular case, the player needs Electrical Repair. Mechanical Repair will let them make the antenna mechanically sound, but not test continuity. If a player has Mech Repair but not Elec Repair, the Keeper can allow them to roll -- but should then feel free to have the antenna be too noisy t... (more) |

A: How to find out the purpose of play of a con game? If the GM won't tell you, either the GM does not know or the GM does not want to tell you. Inexperienced GMs might not know. Experienced GMs should know. Check into their background. All the rest of the time, asking the GM is the best move. (more) |

While "con" being short for "convention" is a typical usage, the phrase "con game" specifically means a "confidence game" in colloquial English, which means a crime of deception.
"con games" appear in many RPGs, ranging from minor deceptions to multi-session impersonations, seductions, corruptions... (more) |
