Question Does a monk use DEX or STR when attacking in a brawl?
Brancalonia, built on top of D&D 5E, adds rules for non-lethal brawls. The rules say that you can't use class abilities like extra attacks, but passive class abilities like Unarmored Defense do apply. Does a monk in a brawl get the Martial Arts dexterity bonus for unarmed strikes, or does the mon...

Question Should posting on Meta affect reputation?
When we launched this community, we did not yet have the ability to set different reputation grants for different categories. We've had this for a while but we failed to follow up before now, sorry. Do you want us to change posts on Meta to not award rep for upvotes or subtract it for downvotes? ...

Comment Post #287071 I played a game once (I forget what -- not an RPG but a dice game) where the dice were placed in foam "trays" that held each die. I guess it was a dice-drafting game. I started down that path but realized I needed more info. About how many "things" does each player need to keep track of? Would ...

Comment Post #287071 It'd only be a partial solution, but have you done any experimenting with using dice as counters? (Obviously you'd need to keep them separate from the ones you roll.) Hit points can be tracked on a D20 for low levels or %ile dice otherwise. Spell slots are one number per spell level. I've never t...

Comment Post #285850 Thanks. I've seen all sorts of creative solutions to scorekeeping on Shabbat; for an RPG, dice would be readily available. :-)

Comment Post #285850 Is this for reference during game sessions, or between them? (I think you mean during, but want to confirm.) Also, if during, are digital approaches fine (or are you, for example, playing on Shabbat when that wouldn't work)?

Question How can we grow this community?
Codidact's communities have a lot of great content that is helping people on the Internet. Our communities are small, though, and sustainable communities depend on having lots of active, engaged participants. The folks already here are doing good work; our challenge is to find more people like you ...

Answer A: How do I ensure that character death is impactful at higher levels?
I've seen two approaches work (in the same campaign): 1. Discuss game philosophy with your players early (before this becomes an issue, but even earlier than that). 2. Make it leave a mark. Discuss game philosophy A longer campaign (and I imagine you're planning a longer one if resurrec...

Comment Post #283741 Puzzles, traps, and "players against the world". I don't have time to develop this into an answer right now -- hope someone else does, or I'll try to do so later.

Comment Post #283589 @#53922 we can't delete tags outright, so the way to make a tag go away is to merge it into another tag. When there are no posts with the tag it shouldn't matter which tag you choose. I merged it into support; I didn't realize it would produce visible effects.

Answer A: A tag had lost magically according to Post History
The history doesn't record category changes (known issue). To create the post on Meta it needed one of the required tags, so I think Mithical probably created the "support" tag before moving so that the post could be moved. (That is a known issue too -- we need a way to apply tags as part of changi...

Comment Post #283563 I like the "stack of notes, one real" approach. I do already do dummy die rolls at times; otherwise it's too obvious when I need to do one but the players don't know why. :-)

Comment Post #283554 It was a D&D game -- some house rules (everybody has house rules, right?), but I can't think of any that would bear on this situation. I had rolled the saving throw, not the player.

Question "You found a cursed ring!" How do I let the player roleplay it without spilling the beans to everyone prematurely?
In a game I was running, a player tripped a magical effect that would alter his behavior (failed save against compulsion magic). I took the player aside to explain, out of game, what had happened -- this would allow the player to roleplay and, I hoped, would not be as obvious to the other players (w...

Answer A: How do I make sure I'm not cutting into other people's RP time as a player?
An RPG campaign is a collaborative team activity with lots of communication. Many of the things you do in other teams, like at work or school, apply here too. More specifically, here are some things that have worked for campaigns I've been in, whether it was me or someone else who tended to be the ...

Answer A: Are things other than Tabletop Role-Playing Games allowed?
This is a good discussion to have. The site proposal on Meta is intended to establish a starting point; communities can and should further develop things. The top-voted answer on the proposal includes this: > The idea would be to include all games that are "role-playing" in style, with the main ...

Welcome to the Tabletop Role-Playing Games community on Codidact, our community for people who play, run, develop, or are interested in human-mediated role-playing games of all genres. We're glad you're here and we're excited to see what you will build. This community is starting "from scratch", wi...
